There is a drive from
the SA Golf Union and the Provincial Unions to grow golf in South Africa.
Gauteng North Golf Union is very active in growing golf amongst children.
Services Golf Club want to contribute to this initiative to further the game
amongst children. Services Golf Club (SGC) will embark on a 3 months golf
clinic that will be held on specified Sunday afternoons. These clinics will be
for all children – golfers and non-golfers. The clinics will be managed by a
PGA professional
On Sunday 10 October 2010 the first of a series
of junior clinics were held at the golf club. 26 Children attended the first clinic. The children
were introduced to golf and its techniques. Children had the opportunity to
practice what the PGA Professional showed them at SGC driving range under
supervision of senior members of SGC and TUT Golf Academy students. The
children will, once they mastered the basics, be allowed to play 9 holes under
the mentorship of senior SCG members. Children and parents alike will have the
opportunity to assess if they like or have the aptitude for the game of golf
during the 3 month period. Formal lessons and membership can then be discussed
with the PGA professional. The clinics will also cater for children that
already play the game and for players with a formal golf handicap. These
players will spend more time playing 9 holes under the guidance of senior
players
The next clinics are
planned for 31 October 2010, 21 November 2010 and 12 December 2010. Dates for
2011 still need to be confirmed. Clinics will take place at SGC in Thaba
Tshwana (Voortrekkerhoogte). Clinics will commence at 14:30. Group lessons will
run for an hour. 9 Holes will be played from 15:30 onwards. A fee of R20.00
will be charged. The fee will cover all the activities, lessons or playing 9
holes for the children that have mastered the competency to play on the course
